CHARACTER INFO
❥ Name: Dorothy Pratt (aka Dot)
❥ Canon: Fallen London
❥ Canon Point: September 03, 1898
❥ Fandom OC Approval: Didn't get a name but I did get approval!
❥ History: For starters, Dot's canon is set in an AU 19th century where the city of London was sold to a group of inhuman weirdos known as The Masters and pulled (or more literally, dropped) underground. It is not the first city to fall and people would rather not contemplate the idea of it not being the last (since when I said literally dropped i meant it - directly ontop of the previous city and its residents, to be precise.) This underground world is called the Neath.
As far as Dot herself goes:
• Grew up uneventfully in Liverpool, England.
• Worked as a freelance writer and columnist for the local paper.
• Came to the Neath 5 years ago (from her current canon point) following a lead on the man who killed her younger brother.
• Was promptly arrested for a crime she didn't commit
• Broke out of prison
• Took up working as a journalist in the Neath as well, both to try and find more information on her brother's murderer and to familiarize herself with her new home. Cut her teeth writing penny dreadfuls and tabloids but is perfectly capable of writing legit news too (no matter what certain editors may tell you.) She also fancies herself a bit of a detective.
• Became interested in The Correspondence (see abilities section) in the course of her researching and investigating.
• Has seen and done some positively wild stuff, including: rallying a crew of rats to take on a larger, more menacing rat, killing a horrific amalgam of spiders, taking a drug that transported her directly into the memories of unfortunate strangers, and joining an exclusive Fight Club sort of organization
• Died once, but got better (Death is a strange and not necessarily permanent thing in the Neath)
• Served as guest lecturer at the local universities (teaching about the Correspondence) until she was kicked out for ousting one of the college heads as a murderer
• Currently trying to gain access to the Iron Republic (a colony in Hell - did I mention that London sits next to the entry to Hell now? Because it does. There's an embassy and everything.)
❥ Personality:
• Bright and highly curious - Dot is naturally very curious and sort of a nosy busybody. She loves asking questions and getting details, making connections and learning secrets.
• Honest and driven - She believes in the importance of finding the truth. A desire to right wrongs, expose injustices, and shed new light on things are no small part of why she picked up the pen in the first place.
• Soft-hearted and magnanimous - Unlike a lot of the people she rubs shoulders with, Dot typically keeps to the straight and narrow morality-wise and always tries to do right by people, even if it puts her in a tight spot. She is a sympathetic woman whose emotions sometimes override her objectiveness.
• Trustworthy and reliable - If Dot makes a promise, she keeps it. She knows a lot of secrets as a result of her trade but won't divulge what she's learned without just reason. If you tell her something in confidence, she will keep it under her hat.
• Somewhat opportunistic - Being good at keeping secrets doesn't mean she's above changing sides, though. She tries to keep herself open to possibilities, alliances and opportunities and will strike while the iron is hot and exploit openings to get what she wants (be it something or someone.) She also likes listening to gossip and has been known to stir up things to get answers.
• Sly and playful - This sort of goes with the above. Dot is a clever girl and her curiosity often goes hand in hand with a sort of cheeky mischievousness - this is seen in her writing, which often contains satirical elements. She can be a bit of a flirt and will affectionately tease or banter with those she is close with.
• Pacifist when possible - Prefers to settle things non-violently when she can but she isn't afraid to knock a few heads together/dish out beatings as needed.
• Impulsive - Reporting is about being in the moment! Sometimes Dot's better judgement is clouded by her emotions or her curiosity and it can lead her to do some pretty reckless things. She also enjoys gambling (and has quite good luck with it!)
• Both classy and trashy - Dot has plenty of poise and is perfectly capable of fitting in with high society, but she is perhaps most at home among the romantic, drunken bohemians of Veilgarden. When she's not working she can be rather hedonistic and will gladly hang out and get drunk with just about anybody.
❥ Abilities:
• A scholar of the Correspondence - Familiar with and able to write/read some words in the unnatural language known as the Correspondence. Writing the symbols generates a lot of heat and has been known to set things on fire (including the writer) viewing them without training can cause discomfort and erratic behavior. Dot is very careful about using these, as much for her own safety as for those around her.
• Unnaturally strong - Dot is surprisingly strong for her size and no stranger to brawling. I say 'unnaturally' strong only because she's wrestled sea monsters and tigers before and won/come out with all her limbs in tact.
❥ Extras:
Items brought
• Little red notebook, inkwell and fountain pen
• Bottle of Morelways 1872 (mushroom wine)
• Bottle of F.F. Gebrandt's Superior Laudanum
God choice: Ohma
